Netflix has begun cracking down on password sharing in the US, following earlier testing in countries like Canada and Spain. While sharing your Netflix password is still technically allowed, there is now an additional fee if you share it with anyone outside of your household. This password-sharing fee amounts to $8 per month per person in the US, in addition to your regular Netflix subscription.
The new policy allows users on the standard plan to add one person outside of their household, while premium users can add up to two. If you choose not to pay the password-sharing fees, your friends or family members will not be able to access their individual profiles on your account.
For those who currently have a profile on someone else’s account, and are not expecting the account owner to pay the extra fees for your profile, you have the option to transfer your profile to a new account. By creating your own account and paying for it, you can retain your personalized recommendations, saved lists, and other settings.
This shift in policy aims to encourage users to have separate accounts and ensure that each individual is paying for their own access to Netflix content.
First you need to enable the Profile Transfer feature on Netflix
To enable the Profile Transfer feature on Netflix, follow these steps:
- If you’re using a computer, open your preferred web browser and go to the Netflix website. Sign in to your account.
- Access the profile that you want to transfer to a new account.
- Hover your cursor over your profile icon located in the top right corner of the screen.
- In the dropdown menu that appears, click on “Transfer Profile.”
- You will be directed to a new page. Click the “Allow” button to enable the Profile Transfer feature.
Note: The exact steps may vary slightly depending on the version of the Netflix website you are using.
Next, we’ll guide you through transferring your existing profile to a separate account.
Please note that the mentioned information about the best live TV streaming services of 2023 and the best TVs of this year is not available to me as my training data only goes up until September 2021, and I don’t have real-time access to the internet. I recommend checking reputable technology websites or conducting a search for up-to-date information on the topic.
If you’re using a phone or tablet, open the official Netflix application, navigate to your profile, and tap on the profile icon located in the top-right corner to access your account settings. Afterward, tap on “Account,” scroll down to the bottom of the page, and select “Turn on profile transfers.” This action will redirect you to the official profile transfer page, where you can proceed by clicking the “Allow” button.
Subsequently, you will receive a notification indicating that profile transfers will be available on your account in the near future. In my case, the notification stated that I would gain access to the feature within a two-day period. Nevertheless, it also offered the option to immediately enable the profile transfer feature by clicking on the confirmation link sent to me via email, which I promptly did.
Now you can transfer your profile to a new Netflix account
To initiate the transfer, log in to your original Netflix account, either through the web or mobile interface. Navigate to the Transfer Profile page, which can be found in your account settings. Once there, you will be presented with an overview of the Transfer Profile process, outlining the features it encompasses:
- Transfers your recommendations, viewing history, saved games, settings, My List, and more to a separate account
- Creates a backup of your profile on the original account
To proceed, click the “Next” button and provide the credentials for your new account when prompted. Verify your email address, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup of your new account. Once the process is complete, your profile will be transferred, granting you immediate access to your new Netflix account.
The owner of the original account will receive a notification once the transfer is finalized.
In the event that you encounter a log-out during the transfer process, you can resume by logging back in and utilizing the “Finish Transfer” setting.
